Senior Official Forum
Office located at KOFN Band Office
The Special Projects – Senior Official Forum at Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation (KOFN) plays a critical role in maintaining and strengthening the relationship between KOFN and Riding Mountain National Park (RMNP). This program, funded by Parks Canada, ensures that the rights, interests, and presence of the Anishinaabe peoples, particularly the Mekis Riding Mountain Band, are continuously recognized and respected within RMNP.
Program Origins
The Special Projects initiative was established by Chief Dwayne Blackbird in 1999, following his successful advocacy for the rights of Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation within RMNP. After winning the land claim for IR 61A, Dwayne Blackbird recognized the importance of forming a coalition with other Indigenous communities connected to RMNP. He created this forum to remind Parks Canada that the Anishinaabe peoples are the traditional gatekeepers of this land, ensuring their rights are always acknowledged.
Purpose and Goals
Through the Senior Official Forum, KOFN aims to:
- Maintain ongoing, meaningful relationships with Parks Canada.
- Advocate for the rights and interests of the Anishinaabe peoples in RMNP.
- Create employment and economic opportunities for KOFN
- Ensure that the cultural and historical ties of the Mekis Riding Mountain Band to RMNP are respected and preserved.
